I’ve heard about unclaimed property on tv infomercials but there was always a fee involved and I don’t like to pay for things I can get for free so yesterday I actually went looking for it!

I ended up at the California State Controller’s website and was able to search for unclaimed property by name.

Sadly, I don’t have any but I found my uncle is owed $1200, my dad $10, my coworker’s dad $37 and now I am looking for money for everyone lol

There are online services that will offer to find your unclaimed money but they can legally charge up to 10% so you might as well simply look up your name and other family members to see if any of you are owed funds. The reason they are able to charge the fees is because many people don’t know how to find the money on their own but that is what I am here for… to tell you how to find it for free!

Unclaimed property could be a refund check from a company that was unable to locate you because you moved, old payroll funds from a job you quit, or simply any money owed to you that you never received. These funds are turned over to the government but you are never notified. California alone has over $5.7 billion in unclaimed property!

Depending on your state you may be able to claim your cash online or by mailing in a form. I don’t need 10% or anything but if you find some money you should join our database or like us on facebook to stay updated on even more ways to make money.

To get started on your search…

1. Locate your state controller’s website. You can do a google search or find your state here

2. Once you are at the state site you may have to navigate around to search for cash or it may be on the homepage. For California,  it is on the left hand side and it says “Start your search” as opposed to NY that lets you search directly from the homepage.

3. If you find money in your name, follow the steps on the site to claim it! Some states say it will take up to 6 months, others who allow online processing will get your funds to you much quicker.
